Leaders for Newtown Boro 2011

FAQ Voting Information

When are members of council elected and how long is their term of office?

There are 6 members of Borough Council: 3 from Ward 1 and 3 from Ward 2. Each member serves for 4 years. The terms are staggered so that every two years, three members are elected. In 2011, 1 member is elected in Ward 1 and 2 members are elected in Ward 2.

When is the next election?

The General Election is on Tuesday, November 8, 2011. The polls are open from 7 am to 8 pm.

How many candidates for Borough Council can I vote for?

In 2011, you may vote for one (1) Borough Council candidate in Ward 1. In Ward 2 you can
and should vote for two (2) Borough Council candidates. Remember, in Ward 2 you must
push the button for two candidates. Even if the candidates for one party are listed next to each
other, pressing only one button for a candidate in Ward 2 is not a vote for both.

Where do I vote?

Voters in Ward 1: Newtown Borough north of Washington Avenue and south of Washington
Avenue between South Congress and South State Street vote at the Newtown Firehouse at 14
Liberty Street.

Voters in Ward 2: Newtown Borough south of Washington Avenue (except as noted above)
vote at the Newtown Sewer Authority at 15 South Congress Street.

I will be away on Election Day. How do I vote by Absentee Ballot?

Absentee ballots may be used by voters who will be unable to vote in person on Election Day
because they will be away, or because of illness or disability. Students attending college out of
town may vote absentee. College Students: Send your application in before you return to school. Start checking your mail box in mid October for the ballot. You must apply for an absentee ballot prior to each election.

* Voting by absentee ballot is a two step process.
1. Complete an application for an Absentee Ballot. This application must
be received by the Bucks County Board of Elections by November 1, 2011.
2. An absentee ballot will come to you by mail. Complete the ballot and return it to the Board
of Elections by mail or in person. Your ballot must be received by the Board of Elections by
November 4, 2011. Remember, if you are voting for the first time you are required to enclose a copy of your driver's license along with your voted ballot.

I'm a registered Republican. Can I vote for Democratic candidates?

Absolutely! In the General Election, you may vote for any candidate regardless of your party
registration. We urge you to familiarize yourself with all the candidates' platforms and vote for
the candidates who will best serve the Borough.

I am not registered to vote. How do I register?

The deadline for voter registration for the November election is October 11, 2011. Complete
a Voter Registration application. Remember, if you have recently moved to
Newtown Borough, you must change your voter registration to your new address before October
11, 2011.

Does my single vote really count?

YES, YES, YES. A candidate can win or lose by a single vote. Recent elections in Newtown
Borough have been very close. Two years ago, a candidate for Borough Council lost by only a handful of
votes. If you want your candidates to win, you must go to the polls and VOTE.
