Leaders for Newtown Boro 2011

Fact Checker

This Election . . . Focus on the Facts

Gerard O'Malley, Julia Woldorf and Mike Sellers would like to set the record straight.

True or False?   The proposed development on the old Stockburger site will have 270-300 condos.

False.  The new TND ordinance amendment adopted in February, 2011 would not permit this many condos on this property.  The site is too small to accommodate anywhere near this amount.  We believe that proper and sensitive development of the Stockburger site is vital to the future of the Borough's business district and we will make sure that any project complies with our ordinances and enhances our town.

True or False?  Community events have been voted down by Borough Council and now these events take place solely in the Township.

False.  Only the First Fourth Parade application was denied by Borough Council.  It was incomplete and received too late to give the Borough enough time to schedule the necessary police coverage for this event.  So why was Welcome Day also held in the Township, instead of on State Street?  The organizers (the NBPA) chose a different venue this year.  As reported in the Feb. 21, 2011 online edition of The Advance, the NBPA wanted to highlight Sycamore Street and felt they "needed more room" than State Street could provide. They never made an application to hold the event in the Borough, nor did they consult with State Street business owners regarding their plan.  Council did approve all the applications for the other annual Borough events this year, including the Memorial Day Parade, the Antique Car Show, 5K races, Market Day, the Halloween Parade, and the Holiday Parade.

True or False?   It is important to realize that the Borough is not Princeton or San Antonio.

True.  We couldn't agree more.  Newtown is a very special place, and we have worked hard with Borough residents and business owners to protect our valuable historic, cultural and natural resources. Like many other successful and vibrant communities have done, Newtown Borough should plan for a bright future, while honoring its unique past.

The  SEPTA parking lot should become a recreational area, perhaps with basketball or tennis courts.

This idea was proposed about 9 years ago.  However, previous Councils discovered then that there would be significant costs associated with this type of project, including mitigating environmental hazards from the old train yard, site improvements and construction, on-going maintenance, and safety and liability concerns.  While we recognize the importance of spaces for public use, the Borough should investigate more suitable locations when planning such a project.
